Staying Motivated Through Winter

A Simple Approach To Fitness & Wellness with Sarah Watson

As winter settles in, even the most committed routines can start to feel a little harder to maintain. The alarm feels earlier, the mornings feel colder and the temptation to stay indoors often outweighs the desire to move.

But according to wellness advocate Sarah Watson, staying motivated through winter isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about creating a routine that feels realistic, enjoyable and sustainable.

“For me, it’s less about staying motivated and more about keeping things simple and consistent,” Sarah says.

Rather than waiting for motivation to strike, she focuses on maintaining the habits that help her feel good year-round. Whether it’s a Pilates class, a gym session, a walk outdoors or simply prioritising a good night’s sleep, the goal is consistency over perfection.

Focus On Movement You Actually Enjoy

One of the biggest mistakes people make during winter is forcing themselves into routines they don’t genuinely enjoy. Instead, Sarah recommends finding forms of movement that you look forward to. That could be strength training, Pilates, a group fitness class at Goodlife Wintergarden or a simple walk through the city during your lunch break. When exercise feels enjoyable rather than like another task on your to-do list, it’s far easier to stay committed when the weather cools down. The key isn’t doing more. It’s continuing to show up.

Why A Change Of Environment Matters

When motivation starts to dip, sometimes the best thing you can do is leave the house. For Sarah, getting out and into the city plays an important role in supporting both her physical and mental wellbeing throughout winter. “Getting out and about gives me a change of perspective and helps me feel more connected and energised,” she explains. Combining wellness with everyday activities can make healthy habits feel more achievable. A workout before work, a coffee after Pilates, a walk between errands or a visit to Wintergarden can all help turn routine obligations into moments that recharge you.

The Small Habits That Keep You Going

While fitness is an important part of Sarah’s winter routine, she believes wellness extends far beyond exercise.

Some of the habits she relies on most include:

  • Moving her body regularly through Pilates, strength training or walking
  • Getting outside for fresh air and natural sunlight each day
  • Prioritising quality sleep and earlier nights
  • Taking time for a coffee and a moment to herself
  • Listening to podcasts or audiobooks
  • Keeping her home and workspace organised
  • Journaling and creating space for reflection

These habits may seem simple, but together they create the foundation for feeling energised, balanced and resilient throughout the season.

Wellness Doesn’t Need To Be Separate From Life

One of Sarah’s biggest wellness philosophies is that healthy habits shouldn’t feel disconnected from the rest of your day. “I think it’s about looking for ways to weave wellness into your everyday life rather than treating it as something separate,” she says. Whether that’s fitting in a Goodlife workout before running errands, taking a walk through the city, meeting a friend for coffee or creating moments of pause between meetings, the goal is to integrate wellness into your lifestyle rather than viewing it as another item on your checklist.

Because winter wellness isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about making small choices that help you feel your best, day after day.
