Our Story

From its origins as a lively theatre district to its transformation into Brisbane’s first flagship shopping destination, Wintergarden has continually introduced pioneering attractions that elevate the city’s cultural landscape.
A vibrant entertainment district in the 1920s, Wintergarden was reimagined as a retail precinct ahead of the Brisbane Commonwealth Games in 1982, introducing a range of retailers never seen in the city and debuting the CBD’s first food courts, offering a variety of cuisines.
The second stage, completed in 1987, brought the city’s first multi-cuisine sit-down restaurant, as well as the Hilton Hotel in the iconic Siedler-designed building, designed to offer 5-star accommodation for the 1988 Brisbane World Expo.
Fast forward to today and Wintergarden is once again entering an era of transition, this time ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. New plans will redevelop the centre into a city-changing experience precinct, harnessing the heritage of the location as a buzzing urban destination and leveraging Wintergarden’s leadership in bringing new retail, entertainment and hospitality experiences to the city.
