Three Ways to wear a Maxi Skirt

I recently dropped into Sheike Wintergarden to check out their new arrivals and immediately fell in love with the Mosaic Maxi Skirt ($139.95)—a maxi skirt in blue and white print.

A friend of mine recently admitted she rarely wears skirts because she finds them tricky to style, and she had a point. Do you have to tuck your top in? How can you wear them in winter without looking too bulky? What’s the right length? Balance is key.

With a cropped tee

At just 163cm, I’m always looking to make my legs appear longer, so I love the high-waisted aspect of this skirt. However, that means I need to balance the top half with either something cropped, or something minimal that tucks in to show off my natural shape. The simplicity of Bravery Tee ($69.95) Let’s the skirt be the highlight of the outfit, while the extended shoulder lines is a nod to the current padded shoulders trend without making you look like you’re ready to play in the Superbowl.

With a co-ordinating top (if available)

Once considered a bit naff, matching pieces have been reinvented in recent years and are now a great way to put a show stopping outfit together with ease — plus get more versatility in your wardrobe as each piece can be paired back with other pieces. For the look of a dress, pair the Mosaic Maxi Skirt with the high-neck Mosaic Top ($79.95). With it’s feminine soft colours and effortless style it is a must have this season. Pair with the matching skirt for a double effect or with Sheike’s Bay Vista shorts for a more relaxed day look. The best part of wearing a coordinating outfit is that it requires little extra styling — just add your favourite accessories and you’re ready to head out the door.

In Winter

For winter, knitwear is an easy winner. Look for a slightly cropped knit. For an edgier look, pair your skirt with a ribbed singlet or tee and a moto-style leather or denim jacket as the structure of the jacket will contrast with the flow of the skirt.
