Lately I’ve been feeling sluggish, exhausted, and overwhelmed and my outfit choices have reflected it because instead of wearing my normal palette of bold brights, I’ve been wearing lots of grey and black.
So often, stylists sing the praises of neutrals and classic colours like black and navy (and it’s true they’ll be power players in your wardrobe), but there’s also a place in every wardrobe for something a bolder—and now is when we need it most!
Because whether you’re aware of it or not, colour has an effect on your psyche. Enter ‘Dopamine Dressing’.
Dopamine Dressing is the practice of wearing bright colours in an extroverted style in order to lift one’s spirits.
In short, it’s about dressing yourself happy.
Research shows that when we look at certain colours it triggers neurological responses in the brain causing the release of hormones.
Warm, bright colours such as red, pink and orange, release dopamine—the “feel-good hormone”—which can improve our mood, heighten our attention span, improve cognitive function, stimulate our creativity and even boost our sex life.
While colours on the cool side of the colour spectrum—blue, green, purple—have been linked to the release of oxytocin, sending out feelings of calm.
Or you can go all out and mix colours and prints from both sides of the colour spectrum, knowing that you’ll bring a smile to the face of those around you.
I don’t know about you, but I can do with all of those emotions right now as we navigate the topsy-turvy world we’re living in which is why I hit Wintergarden this week to source some of the boldest and brightest colours I could find.
And you know what, it definitely helped put a pep in my step!
And if you’re after some colourful outfit inspiration, look no further than the Queen herself. Queen Elizabeth II loves all colours equally and tries to wear each and every one of them and many believe that she changes colours in accordance with her mood.
