Flirty florals

I would estimate that at least 20 per cent of my wardrobe consists outfits that have been inspired by something I’ve seen on TV or in the movies.

There’s a tulle skirt a la Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, to Dirty Dancing’s denim shorts and a stripe t-shirt which were, and still are, perfect for those times when I need to carry a watermelon, I can’t help but find my own versions of the things I love on the screen.

Short suits are making a strong statement this summer and it’s no surprise that I’ve jumped on board this latest trend—and this gorgeous floral coordinating set from Sheike (sold separately) immediately reminded me of Julia Roberts’ terracotta short suit which she wore with a cream silk shirt in Pretty Woman—but with a modern, floral, twist.

When choosing a printed short suit, make sure that the prints match. It’s best to go with matching separates, like I’m wearing, if you’re going for a patterned option. And if you’re a fan of this season’s crop top, wear a fitted one underneath your blazer for something a bit more daring, which is what I’ve done here.

When it comes to florals, I love them any time of the year—from the darker hues of winter to the lighter and brighter florals that bloom this time of year. I’m naturally drawn to floral dresses, but this short suits is a fun smart casual look for Spring/Summer, although the pattern was also available in a gorgeous midi dress that would be perfect for a girls night out or even a Spring wedding.

One of the old style ‘rules’ suggested that it was best to wear solid bottoms and patterned tops, but now is the time to throw all those rules out the window. Why not embrace the coordinating set, or swap things around with floral pants or skirt and a plain top/blazer?

For a more relaxed look, swap out the blazer for a denim or chambray shirt. Wear it tucked in for a more polished look, or open over a singlet or plain t-shirt with sandals for a more relaxed boho vibe.
