Blazing into a new season

These days, a blazer is a key staple of any woman’s wardrobe.

No longer solely associated with the corporate world, this tailored staple has become a wardrobe MVP (most valuable piece) and can level-up almost any outfit.

Sure, the blazer is still well-suited—pun intended—for the corporate world and work-related situations like job interviews, virtual meetings (almost everyone has pulled the ‘business up top, comfy down below’ look in the past year), and so forth, but the blazer’s potential runs much deeper.

Whether it’s throwing a classic check blazer over a white tee and your favourite jeans for a Parisian-inspired look or pairing a pastel blazer with a floral dress and leather flats for brunch, there are countless ways to wear this piece.

  1. Pair a blazer in a more practical neutral colour with the bright-coloured separates you already own.
  2. Throw a black or navy blazer on over blue jeans, a white tee and add simple gold accessories. It worked on Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, and it will still works today.
  3. Say ‘bye bye’ to basic black and embrace the colourful pantsuit like this wonderful watermelon version from SHEIKE (pictured). Add a pair of metallic heels or some statement sneakers to elevate the look with a modern twist.
  4. Throw an oversized or boyfriend style blazer on over sweats or activewear. You’ll look put together, even if you don’t feel it.

Here are four key things to keep in mind when shopping for a blazer:

Your Shoulders – The seams of the shoulder of your blazer should end on your natural shoulder.

Arm Length – Women are luckier than men when choosing blazers because we often have the option of full or three-quarter length sleeves. If you’re buying a blazer with a full-length sleeve, make sure it’s not too short.

Style – There are so many blazer styles to choose from so try a few styles to determine what looks best on you ie. a looser boyfriend style, single breasted vs double breasted , or even a tie waist blazer.

When Will You Wear It? Are you looking for a blazer for work or to pop over your jeans for a casual look? You may want to have two or three styles to choose from in your wardrobe.

The key is to choose the right fabric, colour and ensure a perfect fit; too big it can add unwanted width to your frame; too small and you will feel like you are spending the day in a straitjacket as you won’t be able to move your arms properly.

And when it comes to shopping for Brisbane’s summer days, keep in mind a linen-blend blazer will help keep you cool and looking chic.
