BRISBANE FASHION MONTH FIRST NATIONS DISPLAY

This year’s project will see Brisbane Fashion Month (presented by Wintergarden) working with Brisbane based Wiradjuri man, Robert Henderson. Mr Henderson is a renowned contemporary First Nations artist, co-owner and principal artist of South Brisbane gallery (The Henderson), a self-determinate model of enterprise, and “tukka” café (Birrang Coffee, Birrang is Wiradjuri for ‘Journey to another place’), and is also active in addressing the overrepresentation of First Nations people in Qld prisons and more broadly in prisons overall.

The project is a collaboration with partners Billy Blue and Vil Valor to produce gala attire using the contemporary artwork as inspiration in the textiles, each garment retaining the story of the artwork.  The finished garments will be displayed at various venues namely the Sofitel Hotel as well as on the Brisbane Fashion Month runways – this is a non-profit/non-revenue making project.  We will also be joined by First Nations Turrbal Elder Aunty Maroochy to officially and open and welcome our Brisbane event with performances by industry respected Fred Leone.  Brisbane Fashion Month is proud to try and seek innovative, forward thinking ideas to mix fashion and art.
